The Best Family Restaurants in San Antonio
San Antonio, Texas is a cultural community in south Texas that has a long heritage as a mission city and center for Tejano culture. Finding a family friendly venue here is not too hard; the majority of family restaurants in San Antonio are frequented by friendly patrons who come back for more fun at these establishments. Most of these are somewhat pricey, but I have made sure to include some of the most famous family eateries for all kinds of budgets.
1. The Magic Time Machine

The Magic Time Machine is probably one of the more famous local restaurants that is a favorite of kids in central San Antonio. The location is right inside scenic Alamo heights, off of East Loop 410. The food is fairly pricey, but the experience is tremendous! Kids will love the waiters, who are all in costume, as they perform tricks, pranks, and jokes. The waiters are dressed like famous movie characters, and are eccentric in so many ways. If you ask them for the bathroom, be warned: they will embarrass you (all in good humor)! The atmosphere is designed to bring a fun, crazy good time for the whole family.
2. Dave and Busters

Dave and Busters is a half restaurant, half gaming arcade venue. This means, while you are waiting for your food to come out, the kids can go play some games (supervised, its a policy). The food is good, and moderately priced (about $ 11 per entree). Kids will never get bored in the gargantuan arcade, and when they are all set and done, their tickets will convert to neat little prizes for them to pay home. Dave and Busters also turns into a bar later on in the night; so, if the kids are being babysat, be sure to play some pool or watch some sports, all accompanied by your favorite spirits throughout the night.
3. Chris Madrids

Although not specifically designed for kids, this place is a delicious place to eat out. Chris Madrid’s is locally famous around the entire city for making the best burgers in San Antonio, and that they do. Children will love the food, but won’t be entertained with fun games or waiters (like Magic Time Machine, or Dave and Buster’s) through out the night. This eatery is more of the place to go when you and your family want a good quality, sit down, lunch together. Also, their portions are very generous, and tasty.
4. Rainforest Cafe

If you want a fun environment, you have come to the right place. There are mechanical monkeys, treetops around the entire restaurant, and an occasional “thunderstorm” every hour that the kids will love. The food is pricey, but is worth it to keep up with all the little things they have put into the place. There is a fun gift shop below all of it for children to pick out T-Shirts and other things. Picky eaters will not be glad they paid the price they did; but for those of us who aren’t food critics, the experience will surely be memorable. Since the establishment is right on the scenic “riverwalk”, you can take a walk down and enjoy San Antonio culture after your meal.
5. Alamo Cafe

A fan favorite, Alamo Cafe is known around San Antonio for giving a filling meal, for a great price. Entrees are excellent, and the environment is stylish. The sky on top of the restaurant changes from dark to light throughout the night. This venue is great for large family get-togethers and a good time. Atmosphere can be noisy in some of the more crowded rooms, but there are booths available for families who wish for more privacy. There is also a bar available, just in case you feel the urge to have a spirit. The staff is very friendly, and their Mexican food is one of the best around town. Put quite simply: you have to try out Alamo Cafe for yourself.
