Detroit Tigers All-Time Hit Leaders

1. Ty Cobb: 3,900 hits

The Detroit Tigers’ all-time hits leader is Hall of Famer Ty Cobb. Cobb owns the second highest career hit total in Major League history, trailing only Pete Rose. His lifetime .366 batting average remains baseball’s all-time record by a sizable margin. He hit over .400 three times, marking a career-high .420 in 1911 to take home his only AL MVP. Cobb also owns the Tigers’ franchise records for runs (2,088), RBI (1,805), doubles (665), triples (284), and stolen bases (869).

2. Al Kaline: 3,007 hits

Hall of Fame outfielder Al Kaline sits second on the list of Detroit Tigers’ all-time hits leaders. From 1953 to 1974, Kaline batted .297 with a .376 OBP and .480 slugging percentage for the Tigers. One of 27 members of the 3,000 hits club, Kaline is also the Tigers’ all-time home run leader with 399 jacks. He led the AL with 200 hits on a .340 average in 1955.

3. Charlie Gehringer: 2,839 hits

Hall of Fame second baseman Charlie Gehringer ranks third on the Detroit Tigers’ all-time hits leaders list. Spending the entirety of his 19-year career in Detroit, Gehringer hit .320 with a .404 on-base percentage. He had more than 200 hits in seven different seasons, twice leading the league in the category. In 1937, he took home the AL MVP Award with a .371 average and .978 OPS.

4. Harry Heilmann: 2,499 hits

Sitting fourth among the Detroit Tigers’ all-time hits leaders is Hall of Fame right fielder Harry Heilmann. Heilmann hit .342 over 17 seasons, the 12th highest career average in MLB history. He led the AL in average four times and hits once, reaching career-highs of a .403 average in 1923 and 237 hits in 1921.

5. Sam Crawford: 2,466 hits

Hall of Fame right fielder Sam Crawford starred for the Tigers from 1903 to 1917. Crawford maintained a career batting average of .309 over 2,517 games. He owns baseball’s all-time record for triples with 309 three-baggers. Crawford had ten seasons of more than 180 hits, reaching a career-high 217 in 1911.

6. Lou Whitaker: 2,369 hits

Five-time All-Star second baseman Lou Whitaker sits sixth among the Detroit Tigers’ all-time hits leaders. Whitaker played in Detroit for all 19 years of his Major League career with a .276 average, .363 on-base percentage, and 244 home runs. He marked a career-high with 206 hits in 1983.

7. Alan Trammell: 2,365 hits

Ranking seventh on the list of Detroit Tigers’ all-time hits leaders is longtime shortstop and former Tigers’ manager Alan Trammell. Trammell spent his entire career in Detroit from 1977 to 1996, picking up four Gold Gloves and six All-Star selections along the way. Trammell batted .300 seven times and recorded a 205 hit season in 1987.

8. Bobby Veach: 1,859 hits

Bobby Veach spent the 1910s patrolling Detroit’s outfield and he remains one of the Tigers’ all-time hits leaders. Veach mixed power and speed with a high average, hitting .310 over 14 Major League seasons. He had two 200 hit seasons en route to 2,063 total hits. Veach led the AL in doubles twice, triples once, and RBI three times.

9. Norm Cash: 1,793 hits

Five-time All-Star first baseman Norm Cash ranks ninth among the Detroit Tigers’ all-time hits leaders. Cash spent 15 consistently great seasons in Detroit from 1960 to 1974. He had his career year in 1961 when he led the AL with 193 hits, a .361 batting average, .487 on-base percentage, and 1.148 OPS. He his .271 for his career and his 373 home runs for the Tigers place him second behind Al Kaline for the team record.

10. Donie Bush: 1,745 hits

Detroit’s shortstop of the 1910s, Donie Bush remains one of the Tigers’ all-time hits leaders. Bush often hit for a low average, posting a .250 batting average over 14 years in Detroit. However, he still made a major offensive impact as he led the AL in walks five times and compiled a .357 on-base percentage.

No matter what the university has been formally named over the years-from East Alabama Male College to Alabama Polytechnic Institute-people have fondly called it Auburn since it was chartered in 1856. In this fitting tribute to a landmark Southern institution, vintage photographs depict people, places, experiences, and traditions beloved by the Auburn community.
